Student trumpets come in two varieties, cheap and not-so cheap. Let's start with the cheap trumpets.

Cheap Student Trumpets

There are a number of student trumpets that sell for less than $300 bucks new. Relatively speaking that's cheap. Just because a trumpet is inexpensive doesn't mean it's junk though. This is especially true today as manufacturing standards have increased in places like China where most cheap student trumpets are made.

A case in point are the Etude ETR-100, LJ Hutchen, and Allora AATR-101 student trumpets that made our list of the best student trumpets.

Etude ETR-100 student trumpetEtude ETR-100 Student Trumpet
The Etude ETR-100 retails for around $170 bucks on Amazon and has a lot of great features that will help students play in tune. The horn is also very durable and is made from materials that help fight corrosion even it is not cleaned very often which student players tend to forget to do. The ETR-100 even includes a hard shelled case to help protect it as it gets tossed around on the bus and in school lockers.

With over 25 five-star reviews on Amazon and an average rating of 4.1 (out of 5.0), the Etude ETR-100 is a great value for a student trumpet.

LJ Hutchen Trumpet with CaseLJ Hutchen Student Trumpet
The LJ Hutchen is one the best selling student trumpets and for good reason. For around $250 bucks, you get the best trumpet available in it's price range that boasts excellent tone and smooth valve action, both of which make it easier for young students to learn. What sets this horn apart from many other student trumpets made in China is quality control. Every single instrument is double bench-tested by master technicians in New York before it ships to you. This helps ensure you get a quality instrument that works great right out of the box. Each LJ Hutchen trumpet also comes with 2-year comprehensive warranty that covers everything except damage from neglect, theft or loss.

The LJ Hutchen is highly rated with over 100 5-star reviews on Amazon and an average rating of 4.8 (out of 5.0).

Allora AATR-101 Student TrumpetAllora AATR-101
The Allora AATR-101 has a beautiful warm sound due in part to the red brass used in making the trumpet, a material you do not typically find in a student trumpet especially around the $300 price point. The use of red brass in the bell and leadpipe of this trumpet also make it one of the more stylish looking student trumpets you will find. Lastly, high-end Monel pistons, also not often found in student trumpets, add to the durability of this sharp looking trumpet.

The Allora AATR-101 scores a 3.5 (out of 5.0) in customer reviews on several major trumpet retailer websites.

  1. Useful info, not only for parents buying instruments for their kids, but also for band directors and those of us who’ve been out of teaching for a while and need to know what’s best among the student horns currently out there–when I was getting my degree, Bundy was a popular student horn, but times have changed!!

  2. i have the Yamaha 4335g II student modell it is also made in China it Plays Nice i tested the xeno dident notice the big difference in sound quallity the xeno did not blow me away

  3. Coming back to trumpet playing after 20 years.
I have a Getzen Capri silver trumpet from 1986. It has a crease in the bell from when I dropped it playing marching band.
I’d like to get it fixed and play it, but I’m afraid the cost of fixing it may be higher than buying a new student trumpet and relearning all I have lost o we the years. I was leaning on purchasing a allora 101 lacquer for the beautiful Tri-tone. And it’s on big discount now. $235.
    Any thoughts?

    1. The cost of repairing your Getzen will likely be more than a new Allora, but the Getzen is a much higher quality trumpet. You will especially notice the difference in the valving. If you really want to get back into playing, I’d at least get an estimate to repair your current trumpet. If it’s too much then go with the Allora to at least get back into player. You can always upgrade later.
